Soda and processed-food makers insist that all sugars are the same. Yet with studies linking high fructose corn syrup to obesity, diabetes and, most recently, pancreatic cancer, big brands are quietly backing away from using the corn-based sweetener. -Source: www.dailyfinance.com-

Stepping Through The Change

“Walking for 45 minutes a day, three times a week, helped pre- and postmenopausal women physically and mentally, a study found.  After four months of regular walking, the women felt healthier, had less pain, and were more capable of physical activity.  While the premenopausal women lost weight, the postmenopausal women slimmed their waist sizes and gained lean muscle mass.  Both groups of women benefited mentally; walking boosted energy levels and mad work less emotionally taxing.”  Source: Menopause, April 2010

“Bran, the outer coating of grains like oats, wheat, and rice, may be behind the storied health benefits of whole grains, a study found.  Women with type 2 diabetes who ate the most bran had about a third less risk of dying from any cause over 26 years than those who ate the least bran.  Other components of whole grains–germ and cereal fiber–showed no significant benefit in death rates after lifestyle and dietary were taken into account.” -source: Circulation, online May 10, 2010

A Pain in the Gut

Celiac disease is on the rise!  Celiac disease is an auto-immune condition.  The culprit is gluten that is found in wheat, rye, and barley.  Gluten is what give baked goods that wonderful texture and keeps them from crumbling apart.  Celiac is a multi-system disorder, with the small intestine as the main target of injury.  Celiac disease is not the same as gluten allergy or wheat allergy.  Celiac disease (gluten sensitivity) is a genetically determined autoimmune condition that damages the lining of the small intestine.  Because celiac disease disrupts the digestive process, delayed diagnosis increases the risk of developing neurological problems, osteoporosis, infertility, autoimmune disorders, including Type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease and even cancer, according to Peter H.R. Green, M.D., professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University.  Celiac disease is highly treatable by following a gluten-free diet.

“Being too focused on carb counting can, ironically, lead people to lose sight of eating well.  A group of 8 to 21 year-olds with type 1 diabetes and their parents reported preferring packaged to whole foods – like bulk grains or beans – because the number of carbs is clearly labeled on the packaging.  Some parents limited or even excluded fruit from their child’s diet over concerns about glucose spikes.  Researchers say a healthy diet shouldn’t be just a numbers game; food quality counts too.” -Source: Diabetes Care, December 2009-

Go Fish

Anti-Aging, Health, Nutrition » By Reed Hanson posted on April 29, 2010 No Comments »

“Omega-3 fatty acids from fish may help keep cells young.  Scientists measured the blood levels of these healthy fats in study participants, all of whom had heart disease, as well the length of telomeres in their white blood cells.  Telomeres are pieces of DNA that protect the ends of chromosomes and tend to shorten with age; recent findings suggest that longer telemeres mean healthier people.  Over five years, people who started out with the most omega-3s had the slowest rate of chromosome shrinkage.  More research is needed to confirm the link and explain how the fish fat can protect cells.” Source: Journal of the American Medical Association, Jan. 20, 2010 – click here for more information about omega-3 fatty acids.
